The most famous work by Carpzov, was published for the first time in Wittenberg in 1635 - Benedict Carpzov (the younger) 1595-1666, wrote the present work when he was judge at the Leipzig Schöppenstuhl. Not just in Saxony, but also outside the courts (for more than 100 years) 'an almost legitimate reputation' (ADB IV, 14). It represents the substantive criminal law and criminal procedure law from the beginning of the 17th century and changed the German criminal law. According to Ph. Andr. Oldenburger B. Carpzov should have caused over 20,000 death sentences, especially in witch trials.
